Evergreen Brick Work is community environmental center which is designed to inspire visitors to live and enjoy life in a more sustainable fashion. It is located at 550 Bayview Avenue and the farmers market is opened every Saturday and Sunday for the summer. The farmer that I interviewed was named Ruby.
She was a really sweet lady that answered all my questions with a smile on her face, just beaming with pride for her produce. She got into the farming business from the influence of her husband. Her husband, having a masters degree in agriculture, brought her into the business of farming and she fell in love with it since then. When I saw all the beautiful fresh produce on her table, I can feel how much effort it took to harvest each of the different vegetable. Having grown all her vegetables organically, when I asked her about her stance of organic versus inorganic, she simply stated that she supports organic 100% due to the fact that people are more prone to diseases as of late, and she feels that it has to do with what we consume, which is why she is on the side of organic. I learnt so much from just being at the farmers market, strolling around and just by having the brief chat with Ruby. I have gained a new respect for farmers all over as they strive to bring organic produce to the table, having so much passion in what they do. I was always skeptical about the statement that organic produce are better for your health, but as I talk to some of the farmers here, and did some research of my own, I am completely convinced. As it was my first time at a farmers market, I was really impressed with the array of fresh produce that was available. The energy that they had and pride that the farmers have for their produce was a really refreshing change of pace as compared to the city.
